Chiusanico has many buildings of cultural value to offer. There are many Spanish paintings in the Santo Stefano Parish Church which dates back to the 19th century and is built in neo-classical style, and they include a triptych and multi-colored marble from the 17th and 18th centuries.
There are many other churches too waiting for your visit, and they include the St. Andreas Parish Church, various oratorios, the San Bernardo and St. Nikolaus Chapels and the San Lorenzo Church from medieval ages, which stands among olive groves.
According to historians, the birthplace of Christopher Columbus is supposed to be in the area around Chiusanico. Why don’t you go in search of the same and discover new villages, beautiful untouched natural vegetation, olive groves, mountain forests and lots more. Even the typical farmers who still practice their trade in Chiusanico will want to spoil you with their culinary delicacies.
Hikes, walks and mountain-bike rides can also be conveniently undertaken from Chiusanico. This is an ideal starting point for all possible sport activities.
One can reach the sandy beaches of Imperia from Chiusanico in just 15 minutes by car, and in this way enjoy a perfect combination of a beach and recreational holiday. Many tourist attractions are waiting for you in the provincial capital, as well as a long beach front.

They enjoy being pampered with homemade products by the local farmers who are still actively engaged in this activity. Fresh Pesto, marmelades, stuffed olives, ollive oil and excellent Pigato and Vermentino wines are an absolute must. You will be mesmerised by the scents of fresh thyme and rosemary of the local Focaccia during the annual village festival on 16th July.
History
The earliest written records about the village date back to 1298, but at the same time there are quite a few varying accounts regarding the origins of the village, for instance that Chiusanico was founded as a Roman village or as a village around a monastery. During the Middle Ages the region was ceded to the Marquise of Clavesana and later to the diocese of Albenga.
Around the year 1298, Bishop Nicholaus Ingauno Vaschino sold the village to the Nicholas and Federico Doria brothers for a sum of 10,000 Genoese lira. The town remained property of the Doria family for several centuries, until it became property of Count Lascaris of Ventimiglia in the 16th century.
The region was sold to Duke Emanuele Filiberto of Savoy in 1576, and the latter integrated it into his duchy. Chiusanico was merged with other villages during the French wars, until they were absorbed into the Italian Kingdom in 1859 as separate districts.
The villages once again became independent in 1928 and Chiusanico was part of the mountain commune of Olive and Alta Valle Arroscia from 1973 to 2011.
How to reach
Chiusanico belongs to the municipality of Gazzelli and Torria and is one of the villages in the province of Imperia which lies in the Liguria region. There are many other hamlets near Chiusanico, and they include: Lucinasco (14.6 km), Borgoratto (9.2 km) and Sarola (6.7 km). From the highway exit to Imperia Est you drive towards Torino on the SS28 and past Pontedassio; when you are in the vicinity of Sarola you have to turn right onto the SP29 and follow it until you reach Chiusanico.
