Canyoning in Liguria
Would you like to conquer waterfalls and dive into little lakes?
Then try canyoning, a sport for the whole family! The Ligurian mountain landscape offers a great variety of opportunities to combine sport and nature.
Canyoning is a special experience
Canyoning offers fun and excitement and can be enjoyed by anybody that is reasonably fit and between the ages of 12 and 50. As some drops can be up to 15 metres, you need to have a head for heights. You will travel down the canyon by rappelling, climbing, jumping, slipping and swimming. This not only guarantees an exhilarating experience, but also allows you to explore truly nature in its purest form as well as breath-taking sights. We particularly recommend the canyons Santa Lucia (between Albenga and Diano Marina), Barbaira and Rio delle Vene (in the hinterland of Ventimiglia) in Italy, as well as the canyons Maglia and Bendola in France.
Canyoning in Liguria - tested for you by BlumenRiviera
We met our guide Luigi, who not only speaks Italian, but also English and German, at 9 am and drove to Rocchetta Nervina in the hinterland of Bordighera/Ventimiglia with him. After receiving our equipment (wetsuit, helmet, climbing gear) from Luigi, we got started. We hiked uphill to the starting point of the canyon for about 40 minutes. Although the path was not too steep, this part was demanding.
Please remember to bring solid shoes to prevent slipping! If you wish to take photographs to capture your trip, a waterproof camera is a must! During our ascent, Luigi already pointed out some visible sections of the canyoning route to us, such as a waterfall. After a brief safety instruction by Luigi, we put on our wetsuits and started on the descent. Right at the start, Luigi offered a spectacular 8 metre jump from a bridge into the cold mountain water (13-15 degrees Celsius). There is also an easy scramble route over some rocks on the left, which is the path we took
The striking beauty of our surroundings, the crystal clear water, the vegetation, rocks and the purity of nature were a real eye-opener and it enchanted us from the first minute of the trip.
The first 30 minutes of the route are ideal for warming-up, it doesn’t feature any major obstacles. However, hereafter, the obstacles come in quick succession: at times, abseiling was necessary, as it was impossible to jump; at other times, there was a choice between abseiling and jumping.
A different type of enjoyment could be had in those parts, where small waterfalls were used as slides.
After approximately 2 hours, we reached the most challenging part of our adventure. But before we dared to attempt the darker part of the gorge that opened up towards the top, we took a break. Our guide had packed a waterproof box with a few things to give us strength, which we devoured.
Then we continued our descent. We climbed down several steep gorges in quick succession and jumped down cliffs of up to 8-10 metres (alternatively, the guide can assist with abseiling). We travelled through the water, sometimes wading, sometimes swimming. We also abseiled down a small waterfall. Once we completed this rather demanding obstacle course, we were greeted by the sun and enjoyed a hike to finish off, which did not present us with any further gorges. At the very end of the canyon, we were surprised by a stunningly beautiful waterfall, from which it was possible to jump down. It was crucial that the guide reassured us at all times, so that we always felt well looked after, even when climbing down some very steep gullies.
Depending on the size of the group, the canyoning trip takes 3-4 hours. While it is suitable for novices, however, you should be reasonably fit. Canyoning novices also profit from the fact that the stones are usually not slippery. We had great fun with this adventure and can only recommend canyoning!
